Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator
Understanding your carbon footprint is the first step towards reducing it. Our carbon calculator estimates your annual CO₂ emissions based on your lifestyle, covering home energy, transport, diet, and consumption. The calculations use official UK Government emission factors published by DESNZ.
Calculate Your Carbon Footprint
Answer the questions below to estimate your annual carbon emissions. The UK average is approximately 5.5 tonnes of CO₂ per person per year (consumption basis), though this varies significantly depending on lifestyle choices.
Home Energy
UK average household: ~2,900 kWh/year
UK average household: ~12,000 kWh/year
Transport
UK average: ~7,400 miles/year. Enter 0 if no car.

Understanding Your Results
Your carbon footprint is measured in tonnes of CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent), which accounts for all greenhouse gases weighted by their global warming potential. The main factors that influence your footprint are:
- Home energy - Heating is typically the largest single source of household emissions. Switching to a heat pump or improving insulation can significantly reduce this.
- Transport - A single long-haul flight can equal months of driving. Electric vehicles produce significantly lower emissions than petrol or diesel.
- Diet - Reducing meat consumption, particularly beef and lamb, is one of the most effective personal actions for lowering emissions.
Once you know your footprint, you can take action: reduce what you can, and offset the rest. For our full calculation methodology, visit our Methodology page.
